K-Beauty Exports Hit a New Record. Here’s What That Means for Your FDA Compliance

South Korea’s cosmetics industry just posted another record. According to Korean government export data for September 2026, as reported by Beauty Nury, monthly cosmetics exports passed $1.5 billion for the first time.
The numbers at a glance
September 2026: $1.506 billion, up 31.4% from a year earlier and the highest monthly total on record.
January to September: $11.139 billion, up 31.2% year over year.
Third quarter: $4.165 billion, up 39.3%. This is the first quarter above $4 billion and the fastest growth in five years.
Full-year outlook: Last year’s total was $11.419 billion, so 2026 is already within $280 million of it after three quarters. At the current pace, the year could reach roughly $15 billion, the figure the government had targeted for 2030.
Growth is broad. U.S. exports rose 21.9% in the first 25 days of September, China rose 13.6%, and the EU more than doubled (+110.4%).
Why this matters for FDA complianceThe U.S. remains one of the most important markets for Korean beauty brands. As more products ship, more facilities and brands come under FDA’s oversight. For cosmetics, the key requirements under MoCRA are:
Facility registration renewal every two years. Each facility renews on a schedule based on its own original registration date, and 2026 is the first renewal cycle. If you registered in the early 2024 window, your first renewal has likely come due already.
Product listing, updated annually. The responsible person must list every marketed cosmetic product, including its ingredients, and keep the listing current.
No certificates from FDA. FDA confirmed that it does not issue certificates or verification letters for cosmetic registration or listing. Retailers and partners may still ask for proof, so your own records need to be accurate and up to date.
Don’t forget your OTC products Many K-beauty products, such as sunscreens and acne treatments, are regulated as OTC drugs. These facilities follow a separate cycle: registration and listing certification are renewed every year between October 1 and December 31, and that window is open right now. A cosmetic facility’s renewal can also be submitted together with its OTC renewal.
What to do now
Check each facility’s registration status and renewal date in FDA’s Cosmetics Direct portal.
Confirm that your product listings match what you are actually selling.
If you have OTC drug products, make sure your annual renewal is completed before December 31.
